Health Challenge Wales - Swansea's Plan

Swansea Council, Swansea Local Health Board and other partners, (now known as “Health Challenge Swansea”) are working together to improve the Health, Social Care and Wellbeing in Swansea. The plan will make Swansea, by 2020, a place where:

Communities and individuals are well informed and take responsibility for their own health and wellbeing
  • Everyone is supported to achieve the best level of health and wellbeing possible, living longer, healthier lives
  • Appropriate care is delivered at the right time by a range of organisations working together.

A plan, for achieving this is now available from the websites and contact number below.

Last summer the public in Swansea, partners and professionals were all asked if we were “On the Right Track?” when we consulted on a draft plan. Over 200 responses told us we were.

People agreed that we need to:

  • Promote healthy lifestyles and help people to take more responsibility for their health and wellbeing
  • Reduce inequalities in health and wellbeing
  • Increase people's independence
  • Deliver better, more accessible services
  • Improve the protection of vulnerable people

Some of the main aims of the plan are:

  • To focus on helping people to stay well in Swansea
  • To extend the services of GPs, pharmacists, opticians, dentists and other services based in the community. This should help to reduce hospital waiting lists.
  • To help people to become and stay independent with the right support and help they need.

It is an exciting time in Swansea and an ideal time for you and your family to be fitter and healthier. A National campaign called “Health Challenge Wales” is supporting people to be healthier – for more information click on www.healthchallenge.wales .gov.uk or ring 0845 6064050 for a free pack.

Chris Holley, Leader of the Council and Susan Fox, Chair of Swansea Local Health Board agree:

“Improving the health and wellbeing of the people of Swansea is an ambitious and long term goal. To achieve this goal will require a concerted effort across the public, independent and voluntary sectors and close working with the people of Swansea.”
