Children and Young Peoples Disability and Family Development Officer

Swansea Council for Voluntary Service is working in Partnership with the City & County of Swansea on behalf of the Children and Young People Partnership to provide a support and development service for children and young people who have disabilities and their families.

    Background Information

The introduction of the Welsh Assembly Government's Childcare Act 2006 places a duty on the Local Authority via the Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership (EYDCP) to take the lead role in facilitating the childcare market to ensure it meets the needs of working parents; in particular those on low incomes, those with disabled children, or those who wish their children to attend Welsh Medium provision.

It also places a responsibility on the Local Authority to broaden its existing duty to provide information on childcare to ensure that people have access to the full range of information they need as a parent of children 0-20.

Section 26 of the Childcare Act placed a duty upon Local Authorities to prepare an assessment of the sufficiency of childcare in their area.

The post of Children and Young Peoples Disability and Family Development Officer will:-

    • Provide a support and development service for children and young people who have disabilities and their families ensuring that they are fully engaged with the Childcare Act 2006
    • Gather views and feedback from children and young people who have disabilities and their parents/carers about services and gaps in provision, ensuring representation at a strategic level
    • Establish, support and develop networks, individuals and initiatives to further the participation of children and young people who have disabilities and their parents/carers
    • Facilitate the development of new and existing services for children and young people who have disabilities and their families.
    • Ensure that information and communication systems are in place so that the project is accountable to all stakeholders.
