Open College Network (OCN) Accreditation: Volunteer Core Skills

Involve Induction Training is accredited by the Open College Network (OCN). Involve learners can recieve accreditation at nationally recognised levels of study. Please see the details below for more information on how you could receive accreditation.

Please note: OCN Accreditation is optional. If you would like to receive it you need to inform your training officer before part two of the Induction training. If you do not want to receive accreditation, it will in no way affect the volunteering opportunities available to you with Involve.

    What is OCN Accreditation?

Learners receive a certificate showing the learning outcomes they achieved at nationally recognised levels of study. The Involve Induction training means learners will meet the assessment criteria of the Volunteer Core Skills Unit (Level 2, Credit Value 6). Level Two is comparable to NVQ2 intermediate GNVQ and GCSE. More information on OCN accreditation can be found on www.ocnwales.org.uk

What do I have to do?

    • Inform the training officers on Part 1 that you would like to complete the Core Volunteer Skills unit.
    • Certain written activities on the Induction training will need to be submitted to the training officers.
    • Attend the post-training interview.
    • Complete a post-training workbook.
    • Complete three months volunteering.

    Is the written work difficult?

Everything has been designed to be as straightforward as possible. The workbook contains one exercise that requires about 200 words writing, and the other exercises in the book are much shorter. All the answers are provided on the training and in the training packs you are given after every session. The Training and Assessment team can answer any questions and offer support to all participants.

How long until I am accredited?

Any written work is marked by the Training and Assessment team at Involve and is then checked at the end of the academic year (June/July) by SCVS and an external moderator. Volunteers are given feedback on their work by the Involve staff once it has been marked. Certificates will then be passed on to learners once they are made available from OCN.

    What are the learning outcomes?

The learning outcomes for volunteering core skills are detailed on the 'Volunteer Core Skills' overview. This can be found at <https://ocnwales.org.uk/unitprint.aspx?unitlang=en&natcode=GA92WN002>

Who is the Training and Assessment Officer?

Danielle Lock is the Training and Assessment Officer/Support Services Team Leader. She can be contacted on (01792) 457299. You will more than likely meet Danielle during some point of the assessment process.

Is there any other way that I can receive recognition?

If you are 18-24 you can become a Millennium Volunteer. Millennium Volunteers is a UK wide programme supporting young people to make a commitment to volunteer for 200 hours in their community. It encourages 16-24 year olds to build on existing skills and interests and to gain new experiences by giving your time to worthwhile and well-organised volunteering activities. Your efforts are recognised through a 50-hour and 100-hour Certificate and a 200-hour Award of Excellence signed by the First Minister of the Welsh Assesmbly Government. If you would like to become a Millennium Volunteer, please as one of your training officers for more information.

Any other opportunities for recognition or accreditation will be offered to eligible volunteers as the training team identifies them.
