Mental Health Volunteer Project

About the Project

The Mental Health and Wellbeing Volunteer Project, funded by Swansea Trust and managed by SCVS, is a Social Support Project for people with Mental Health problems.

Based at Cefn Coed Hospital, Cockett in Swansea, we train and support volunteers to offer low-key social support for individuals experiencing Mental Health problems.

What can you do?

We have a diverse range of volunteering options, including:

  • Opportunities within the Hospital, on the wards and in the Patients Library (which is a communal meeting point for service-users within the Hospital).
  • Volunteering in the Patient's Council based at the hospital and with the Lifelong Learning Project, that offers various learning opportunities to service-users (E.G Basic Skills, Gardening, I.T.)
  • Volunteering in the community, in the Community Drugs Team and various mental health social groups and day centres in the Swansea area.
  • The Listening Project for in-patients, which is run by volunteers with counselling skills.
  • Volunteer with one of our activity based groups.
  • We also have links with the Forge Centre in Port Talbot where social groups are held twice a week.

What you'll need to volunteer, and how to find out more

We don't ask for formal qualifications, we feel it's more important for our volunteers to possess a caring, outgoing nature, and to have a general respect for all individuals; but we would particularly welcome volunteers who would be willing to take part in one to one befriending in the community (and have several opportunities with male and female service-users of various ages), or who are carers of or people who have experienced their own problems in the past.

The age range of people referred to us is between 18 – 70 years old, so we also try to recruit volunteers who are between these age groups!
