Volunteers Week 2009 – The 25th Anniversary!
During the great weather this year, 3 successful events took place in Swansea to celebrate Volunteers Week, as well as coverage in the Evening Post and a daily slot on Swansea Sound.
Swansea Volunteering forum, Swansea College and SCVS Youth Volunteering Team came together to deliver a Swansea College based Volunteer Information Fair on Monday 1st June. Over 150 students from the college visited the event and feedback from students, tutors and volunteering organisations was excellent. Many of the 17 organisations represented recruited volunteers and made contacts with college staff.
Tuesday 2nd June saw the National Waterfront Museum transformed into Swansea's largest 25th Volunteers Week event. Opened by Kevin Johns, the event was attended by 20 organisations who used the opportunity to recognise the contribution of their volunteers and recruit more. Approximately 40 volunteers undertook the Volunteers Walk drawing attention to Volunteering within the City Centre. The Disconnected, a local voluntary sector band associated with Caer Las entertained all at the event, and the new LEANA Project was also officially launched.
Wednesday 3rd June saw 60 young people who volunteer in many different ways in different projects across Swansea descend upon the Mansion House for a reward event hosted by the Lord Mayor of Swansea. The Lord Mayor Cllr Alan Lloyd and his wife welcomed the young people and congratulated them on their contribution to Swansea. Carol Green, Director of SCVS and Allan Tootill, 14-19 Network Vice Chair expressed their pride in the achievements of the young people and highlighted the improvements volunteering has made to the young people's skills and futures, and Swansea Youth Bank launched their second round of grants open to young people with ideas of how to develop Swansea youth led projects which utilise young volunteers. Julia Thomas Stock and Flik Walls (SCVS Youth Team) were delighted at the success, fun had and 100% turnout of all those invited.
