What exactly does it mean when we say “poverty is increasing”?  Who counts as being “in poverty” and who doesn’t?  What causes poverty in the UK, and what are the most effective ways to help people escape its grip?

These questions are often answered with opinions and ideas, rather than with facts.  “Making Sense of Poverty” will give you knowledge about the measures and the drivers of UK poverty, so you feel more confident to discuss it, work with it and advocate for those trapped in it.

Learning Objectives:

• Knowledge of how poverty is defined and measured in the UK, and of the limitations of official measures of poverty
• Understanding of the impacts of poverty on those affected and wider society
• Understanding of the causes of poverty in the UK
• Increased confidence in discussing poverty and in planning and evaluating effective interventions.
