This one day equivalent, 2 part course covers what you need to know to ensure the safeguarding of children and adults in your organisation. The training is aimed at staff and volunteers who have any contact with children, young people and/or their parents/carers or adults at risk and/or their carers.

Cost: £25 to SCVS member organisations.

Trainer: Danielle Lock - SCVS

Introduction and Background

Social Care Wales has been leading on the development of the National Safeguarding Training Standards. The standards have been co-produced by a multi-agency national development group as well as other groups focused on specific aspects of the work, such as training and workforce specialist task and finish groups, a professional representative sub group and a focus group with All Wales People First members. The standards were developed because:

  • There were no multi-agency, national standards for safeguarding training in place
  • There was a lack of consistency in the design, content and provision of safeguarding training across organisations in Wales
  • There was confusion around the appropriate levels of safeguarding training for the workforce.

Target group

The training is targeted at Group B practitioners who spend time with people in a group setting or on a one-to-one basis. Group B members of staff or volunteers within an organisation will have a particular responsibility in relation to the people they work with and will need a higher level of knowledge than those in Group A because of their direct involvement with people. The content for this group has a focus on four areas:

  1. Legislation, national policies, codes of conduct and professional practice in relation to safeguarding.
  2. How to work in ways that safeguard people from abuse, harm and neglect.
  3. The factors (SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS), situations and actions that could lead or contribute to abuse, harm or neglect.
  4. How to RECOGNISE, report, respond and record concerns or allegations related to safeguarding. This training can also be used as refresher training for staff who have previously taken part in a Safeguarding Level 2/Group B training.

Course aims

The course has been designed to convey key values and memorable principles in the safeguarding of individuals and to provide those who provide care or support with basic foundation knowledge. It is expected that those taking part would undertake further training and learning relevant to the individuals they support, children or adults.

Learning outcomes:

By the end of the course, participants will:

  • Describe how to work in ways that safeguard people from abuse, harm and neglect.
  • Explain factors, situations and actions that could lead or contribute to abuse, harm or neglect.
  • Consider legislation, national policies, codes of conduct and professional practice in relation to safeguarding.
  • Know how to recognise and report different types of abuse, neglect and harm.
