Bags of Hope logoBags of Hope UK provides bags, suitcases and holdalls for children and young people that can be used throughout their journey in the care system – if you support young people in this situation, they can help.

One of the key issues they address is that often, children and young people are moved within the care system with their personal belongings stored and transported in bin liners and shopping carrier bags.

This often happens as a result of limited resources, ongoing pressures for professionals and the nature of emergency transitions, but children and young people say that this contributes to the stress and anxiety about moving as they fear that their possessions, which may remind them of life prior to foster care may become lost or damaged.

This makes children and young people feel as though they are rubbish and that no one cares. Bags of Hope UK feels this is completely unacceptable, and that children, young people and their belongings should be treated with dignity and respect.

Bags of Hope UK aims to provide bags, suitcases and holdalls for children and young people that can be used throughout their journey in the care system. These items belong to the young people and must not be kept by the foster carer or professional, preventing moves where belongings are transported in bin liners and shopping bags. They also provide toiletries and comforters which are age appropriate.

If your organisation supports children moving around the care system, they can have free access to the service. Young people who are homeless can also access the bags, as well as those affected by domestic abuse.

What you need to do:

There is NO cost for the above. All you have to do is send a request to [email protected] with the details, and they will deliver the above. Your organisation decides what goes out to the children and young people. Once the goods have been delivered, there is no further input from Bags of Hope, unless you need more.

Requests can come from anyone, not just a professional – as long as they can demonstrate a need. Young people can also make contact directly.
