What a mentor could do for you

These meetings have helped by acting as a sounding board for my thoughts and ideas, and reassured me of my capability and the importance of what I have to say.

Being a trustee can be challenging at times. It’s a role with great responsibility and sometimes competing demands. In difficult moments or when new in role on a management board who wouldn’t benefit from the support of an experienced sounding board?

Link Up mentoring aims to support trustees with the long term aim of strengthening 3rd Sector management boards. It is a confidential professional relationship between a volunteer mentor and trustee which supports and encourages the trustee to manage their own learning and development though support, advice and guidance; in order to maximise or improve organisational goals or individual skills.

Link Up mentors are volunteers with many years’ experience working within the private / public / academic or third sector. They receive an induction in mentoring skills and third sector governance, and are supported throughout their mentoring relationship.

The benefits for trustees are many: exposure to difference approaches and perspectives, a chance to think out loud, chance to explore options, an enhanced awareness of strengths and potential, time to reflect, honest and constructive feedback. For trustees new to role it can be a real confidence booster:

As a young trustee, the meetings have enabled me to have an improved confidence in my ability to make a positive contribution to my charity at board meetings.

But even for more established trustees mentoring can support their role, whether as a refresher of skills:

(mentoring has) …improved my understanding of etiquette – how to get my point across effectively and concisely, the best ways to communicate with other trustees etc…

Or as a means of focusing attention on priority tasks:

The meeting with…. was very useful. We spoke in detail about preparations for (our) upcoming AGM…

For 3rd Sector organisations Link Up provides a FREE opportunity to utilise the skills and talent of experienced mentors to support the development and learning of trustees facing challenges or who are new to roles.

Investing time supporting individual trustees in order to maximise the potential of the management board as a whole.
