Motivational Interviewing is a style of communicating which supports people through the process of making changes that could improve the quality of their lives.

Trainer: Sarah Millband

This course will take place face to face.

Cost: £20 to SCVS Member Organisations.

This course will help you with:

  • Understanding the key features of the MI approach to supporting change
  • Identifying the essential skills involved in MI
  • Practicing using these essential skills

Motivational Interviewing is a counselling approach designed to help people find the motivation to make a positive behaviour change. This client-centred approach is particularly effective for people who have mixed feelings about changing their behaviour – one part wants to make a change to a healthier life for example, whilst another part doesn’t feel ready or able to.

Motivational Interviewing is a unique approach, and it has a particular "spirit”, which is collaborative, evocative, and honours client autonomy.  MI has a focus on building the client's self-confidence and trust in themselves, whilst helping them take responsibility for themselves and their actions.

This is an introductory workshop and it’s designed for those in a helping role who wish to develop their skills for supporting others to make changes.  If you’re interested in exploring a client’s motivation for changing through a respectful process of collaboration, rather than confrontation, then this workshop is for you.

Please note that if you fail to attend or you provide less than 2 weeks' cancellation notice you will be charged the full amount. If you find that you are unable to attend, we do allow and encourage you to find someone to take your place on the course, if this is possible for us to do for you at the time.
