People with learning disabilities are being recruited and trained as Community Champions to involve and inspire others to express their views and effect change in service provision in a creative, accessible way.

The project now has Community Champions representing:

Employment Transport Direct Payments Equality and Discrimination
LGBT Social Lives and Relationships Politics I.T Men Women Information
Finances Emergency Services Dementia Religion/belief

The Champions are involved in local learning disability planning and strategy groups, as well as attending consultation meetings allowing them to represent their peers and give people with learning disabilities a voice across the city. A number of the Champions have become qualified trainers and deliver a variety of courses to a wide range of organisations and community members.

Working with the team to improve the annual review process and to empower people to take control of their lives and the decisions that matter. This is being lead by 2 of the Community Champions who will be attending local day centres and learning disability groups to gather feedback before reporting their findings to the Community Support Team in March.

A new campaign to raise awareness of the local learning disability community and encourage businesses and organisations to sign up to a pledge to improve their accessibility to vulnerable adults and make Swansea a better place for everyone. The Champions will be able to work with those who sign up to achieve this and promote them through local and national networks as 'learning disability friendly' and hopefully inspire better practice and services for all.
