Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person who is developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem, or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until the appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves.

Two day course taking place on 9th & 16th July, 9.30 - 4.30 on both days. Taking place face to face at SCVS.

Learning objectives:

  • Know what is meant by mental health and mental illness
  • Know the impact of stigma associated with mental health
  • Understand Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)
  • Know possible signs and symptoms that may be associated with an adult experiencing distress
  • Know the MHFA action plan (ALGEE) for assisting an adult experiencing distress
  • Know crisis intervention for suicidal behaviour and non-suicidal self-injury

The Adult Mental Health First Aid (Wales) course is based on international MHFA Guidelines Curriculum content is evidence-based, with the input of mental health professionals, researchers, and consumer advocates.

Participants will gain improved knowledge of mental illnesses and their interventions, knowledge of appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in helping individuals experiencing a mental health problem.

Topics covered include:

  • Developing mental health problems
  • Depression
  • Anxiety problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use problems

Mental health crises:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Severe effects from alcohol or other drug use
  • Aggressive behaviours

Cost: £40 to SCVS member organisations.

Please note that if you fail to attend or you provide less than 2 weeks' cancellation notice you will be charged the full amount. If you find that you are unable to attend, we do allow and encourage you to find someone to take your place on the course.
