Youth Mental Health First Aid Accredited - Face to face course

Mental illnesses often start in adolescence or early adulthood and it is important to detect problems early to ensure the young person is properly treated and supported. The YMHFA (Wales) course teaches adults how to provide Mental Health First Aid to friends, families and co-workers.

Great and clear teaching, it allowed me to learn about how to approach mental health first aid in the appropriate manner and gain confidence to act when presented with difficult situations, in order to help young people

Learning Objectives:

• Know what is meant by mental health and mental illness.
• Know the impact of stigma associated with mental health.
• Understand Mental Health First Aid (MHFA).
• Know possible signs and symptoms that may be associated with a young person experiencing distress.
• Know the MHFA action plan (ALGEE) for assisting a young person experiencing distress.
• Know crisis intervention for suicidal behaviour and non-suicidal self-injury for young people.

The YMHFA (Wales) course teaches adults who have frequent contact with adolescents, such as parents, guardians, school staff, sport coaches and youth workers, how to assist adolescents who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.

The Youth Mental Health First Aid (Wales) course is based on international MHFA Guidelines. These Guidelines were developed using consensus of mental health consumers, carers and professionals from English-speaking developed countries. The YMHFA course teaches adults how to assist adolescents who are developing any of the following mental health problems, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis:

• Developing mental health problems
• Depression
• Anxiety problems
•  Eating disorders
• Psychosis
• Substance use problems

Please note that if you fail to attend or you provide less than 2 weeks' cancellation notice you will be charged the full amount. If you find that you are unable to attend, we do allow and encourage you to find someone to take your place on the course, if this is possible for us to do for you at the time.
