We’re delighted to announce the successful applicants to the small grants round of the Mynydd Y Gwair Community Fund, which closed at the end of 2019.

The Mynydd y Gwair Community Fund offers grants to organisations providing services, facilities or activities that benefit the communities within the Community / Town Council areas of Llangyfelach, Pontlliw and Tircoed, Pontarddulais, Mawr, Penllergaer, Clydach and Morriston.

The micro grant round took place at the end of 2019, and offered up to £1,000 to third sector organisations, social enterprises, schools and Town and Community Councils in the areas of benefit.

This round, 11 applications were received, of which 10 were successful; with £9,904 awarded in total.

The 10 successful applications are:

• Dance to Health Pontarddulais - improve health and wellbeing of individuals particularly older people, and to help to prevent falls
• Friends of Clydach Heritage Centre - Display stand and panel for artefacts and materials in outdoor display area
• Garnswllt Welfare Hall –new stage lighting, PA system and new tables and chairs
• Old Blacksmith Men's Shed Clydach - purchase of retractable awning to expand workshop capacity
• Penllergare Trust - hazel coppice restoration and maintenance programme
• Pontarddulais Comprehensive School - enhanced sporting facility at Pontarddulais Comprehensive School and the wider community
• Pontarddulais Cricket Club – accessible toilet that all can use providing an improved facility for all of the community
• Pontarddulais Partnership (food project) – further develop the free food and food bank project, and expand the Food and Nutrition project further into the community
• Pontarddulais Partnership (group support) - set-up and support small community groups not currently constituted
• Pontarddulais Town FC - Fencing of Playing Fields to provide a fun and safe environment for the children, young people and adults to participate in football training and games.

The fund has been made possible as a result of the Mynydd Y Gwair wind farm, which was completed by innogy in 2019. Now it is operational, the 16 turbine project can generate enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent needs of approximately 22,600 average Welsh homes.

The community funding from Mynydd y Gwair Wind Farm is long term, sustainable funding, and is expected to distribute approximately £6 million over the 25-year operational lifetime of the project.
