Friends of Swansea Botanical Gardens The Friends of Swansea Botanical Gardens (FSBG) is a volunteer-led Registered Charity dedicated to supporting, enhancing, and promoting the Botanical Gardens in Singleton Park. FSBG run a Plant Shop on site, where volunteers grow and sell a wide range of plants and shrubs. This entails sowing seed, potting up, weeding, together with pricing and labelling of each pot. Meeting and greeting our customers and working at the till, are other most rewarding roles. All proceeds from the plant shop are reinvested directly back into the Gardens, funding new planting schemes, tools, improvements that enhance the visitor experience. Our horticultural volunteers work alongside council staff. This role is more physical and requires basic gardening experience as volunteers engage in tasks such as digging, weeding, deadheading, pruning to keep the Gardens looking their best. Over the last 30 years our group has played a key role in major developments, including the creation of new perennial beds, wildflower garden area, wood carvings, signage including QR-coded plant labels for learning and supporting heritage features throughout the Gardens. In 2021 FSBG were presented with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service given to voluntary groups that have the highest standards in everything they do. FSBG welcome volunteers of all ages and abilities bringing with them enthusiasm, teamwork, and a love of nature. By joining us, volunteers help protect one of Swansea’s most beautiful green spaces while making new friends, having fun and learning new skills.
